The International Day of Charity was established to recognize and celebrate charitable works of organizations and individuals that devote time and effort to help those in need. In honouring the spirit of giving and promoting charitable efforts, September 5th was designated as the International Day of Charity by the United Nations in 2012. On this day, the people around the globe are invited to support charities and charitable causes, carry out charitable works, as well to raise public awareness of social responsibility and this event.
September 5th was chosen in the honor of Mother Teresa’s work as the date is the anniversary of her death. Mother Teresa devoted herself to caring for the sick and poor and her charitable work has been recognized and acclaimed throughout the world.
This day provides us with an excellent opportunity to make a positive impact in the lives of those unprivileged and less fortunate through charitable giving. Regardless of how much or how little we have to give, each of us has the potential to make a real difference in the lives of those in need. Charitable giving can be in many ways including giving your time as a volunteer, starting or joining a fundraising event/campaign, giving gifts in kind, providing your service for a discounted rate or for free, donating money to charities, or food, clothing and gift cards to the battered women’s and homeless shelters, providing support to seniors… The possibilities are countless and so is the need. Even a simple gesture as providing a meal, tea or coffee to a homeless person can make a big difference in someone’s day.
As we are well aware, we are living through an extraordinary moment in history – the COVID-19 pandemic and its social and economic upheaval. Many people are in need and many charitable organizations are urgently seeking donations to continue their work in these uncertain times.
Today, September 5th, is an opportunity to open your heart to those who need your support. Find a charity best aligned with your beliefs and goals and donate! Go with what you think will have the most impact. Your gift today can reduce suffering, cure decease, increase equality, help the vulnerable, feed the homeless and be a closer step to better humanity. Even small donations can make positive changes in the lives of many unfortunate. Together we can change the world for the better. So please join the world in honouring the International Day of Charity and be a hope for a better tomorrow of someone in need.
